The Origin of Pocket Bikes
The idea of pocket bikes also referred to as mini bikes, mini motos, or mini motorcycles) began years back in Japan, a country known for miniaturizing full-scale products. As crude mockups of the initial pocket bikes were developed and ridden, a fresh trend and following developed. Because the sport spread into Europe, Italian manufacturer Polini began research and development into producing top quality racing Minimoto bikes. Through the entire years, the mix of Japanese innovation and Italian craftsmanship has produced ultra powerful pocket bikes.
Some of today's top motorcycle racers got their begin in the activity of pocket bike racing. Champion riders were only available in this smaller scale sport and finally dominated all pocket bike racing events across the world.
Until recently, quality pocket bikes were largely out of reach and unavailable to the casual rider. Prices of pocket bikes reached up to $4000. These astronomical costs were due mainly to research and development costs to supply optimum frame geometry, motor configurations and dimensions. Today's manufacturers have the ability to utilize the information pioneered by these Italian and Japanese companies and develop pocket bikes which are essentially configured exactly the same way including motor setup, frame geometry, braking systems, etc. Because these upfront costs were avoided, prices of the top quality pocket bikes are significantly less expensive today.
